People have used arnica as a natural pain reliever for centuries. Yet, I’ve met so many people who never heard of this herb that grows in mountainous regions around the world. It’s one of nature’s highly effective pain relievers. Yet, unlike the opioids, you’ll find nothing addictive in it. It does not trick the brain. It actually acts upon the mechanism that causes pain—inflammation.
Arnica is a great natural pain reliever because its active ingredient, helenalin, inhibits the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines. This is the body’s response when it thinks your tissues have been injured. (An appropriate response is good, but often our body’s over-produce cytokines, which is responsible for painful swelling.
In addition to modifying cytokine production, arnica can help to speed up the healing process. It does this by improving circulation into and out of a damaged area. This makes it an excellent choice for treating pain and inflammation associated with arthritis, injuries, and even surgery.
How to Use Arnica as a Natural Pain Reliever
Applying arnica to the skin is the safest way to use it. It comes in many forms that make this easy. Creams, lotions, ointments, gels and as massage oils.
Pure arnica essential oil (EO), however, is too concentrated. Never apply it to your skin without diluting it with 2 parts of a carrier oil (such as almond oil) to 1 part arnica EO. 33% arnica EO is the maximum strength that is safe.
Arnica is also available in pill form. Based upon our research, however, we only recommend the use of arnica internally under a doctor’s supervision. It has blood thinning properties, which could prove life-threatening.
