Description

Pain relieving arnica has been recognized for centuries in European tradition as a bruise remedy. Bruises can be very painful, so this could be why arnica’s effectiveness as a pain relief agent has been overshadowed by the bruise folklore.*

Unfortunately, arnica’s effectiveness for neither bruises or pain has not been evaluated by the FDA. However in folklore, many personal testimonies support its use. This may explain why health food stores all across America sell products made with arnica.*

Likewise, lavender has a history of soothing away headache pain.

My Story

Arthritis runs in the family. Based upon lavender’s history as a headache remedy, I tested a lavender cream available in Canada. Its ability to help relax my stiff joints in the morning impressed me. And it didn’t take much.

I also found MSM was helpful. That’s why I discovered arnica a few years later. It was nearby in the natural pain relief aisle.

I didn’t like the gel-based products on the market. They were tacky and left my feet feeling sticky. I was looking for soap ingredients, and that’s when I found a manufacturer of arnica oil in the Rocky Mountains. I found a recipe for making lotion, and the rest is history. I’ve been making pain relieving arnica lotion ever since.

Around the same time, I found a lavender-based massage oil at Natural Grocers. While my massage therapist couldn’t use it (which is why I developed my original arnica lotion), my body really responded to it. I knew I would eventually want an arnica and lavender lotion for personal use.

Someday, I may start making an arnica and lavender based massage oil. However, oils are harder to carry. They’re notorious for leaking out. So I developed this Arnica Lavender massage lotion instead.

Essential Oil-Enhanced Pain Relieving Arnica

I love the feel of this lotion. It absorbs quickly and slides on beneath my hands without friction. However, that’s not all I like about it. With a little research, I found a combination of essential oils that folklore alleges possess soothing properties that complement the arnica. I use these oils to scent the lotion.

Here’s why lavender EO works. Lavender EO was as effective as tramadol, a prescription medication, at reducing pain in one study. [Source]*

Then there’s Rose Geranium EO. It contains three components that studies show reduce inflammation (a primary cause of pain)—citronellol, geraniol, and citronellyl formate. [Source]*

Finally, I include Grapefruit EO, primarily for its scent profile. However, it also offers mild anti-microbial activity. [Source]*

I make no claims for this lotion. I can’t tell you it will take away pain. However, test it for yourself. If your body responds to arnica and lavender, this lotion could take the edge off your discomfort.
