Arnica Hemp and Lavender Lotion

Europeans use arnica for bruises. The herbal tradition associating arnica with pain relief is also ancient. Lavender for headache relief is also an ancient tradition. Lesser known is the anecdotal evidence that it also relieves pain in other parts of the body.*

The discovery of non-psychoactive cannabidiol (CBD) for calming inflammation is more recent. Though some websites claim its use goes back thousands of years, it’s really a recent entrant to the herbal scene. Personal testimonies suggest each of these herbal extractions are effective separately. However, because the FDA requires testing to make any claims, we sell this lotion solely as a body care product.*

My Story

When I lived in St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands, I contracted pneumonia. A full course of antibiotics later found me just as congested as when I started. My husband was landscaping a local health food store and the owner, Aubrey Edwards, called to ask when the crew was going to arrive that day. I apologized for his tardiness, explaining that I was so sick I hadn’t been able to take our son to school. That’s when I learned he was a naturopath. His recommendations for treating my pneumonia naturally were so effective that my cough left completely in two days. I have sought plant-based solutions to resolve life’s everyday aches and pains ever since.

Now, I realize my story is just anecdotal evidence. However, I’m not alone. I first discovered arnica when we returned to the U.S after spending almost five years in Canada. (Learn why I developed my first arnica lotion formula here.) Around the same time, I began using a lavender massage oil just because I love the scent. I quickly learned it helped my muscles relax..

Then I learned about cannabidiol, a hemp extract, in the summer of 2019 while helping staff a booth at the Clark County Fair (southern Washington). Multiple sellers had booths on the fairgrounds, and one stopped by our booth. I accepted the offer to test his product. It seemed to relieve my shoulder tension (a side effect of writing for hours a day). However, I felt my pain levels didn’t justify purchasing at $100 for 15 ml.

I hate going around smelling like those old muscle balms I grew up with. Who wants to announce they’re in pain? So I’ve looked for natural solutions with a more subtle scent.

Okay, Lavender isn’t subtle, and neither is Rose Geranium. Yet, the two together don’t smell like muscle balm. They smell like a spring garden—but not overwhelming.

Why Combine Arnica, Lavender and Purified Hemp Extract?

My friend Aubrey claimed that the combination of many herbs produces a greater effect than either herb used separately. There are few studies to confirm that this is true. It’s primarily folklore. However, it was this concept that inspired me to develop a formula that combines these three ingredients, along with rose geranium essential oil.

It took some time to find a reliable wholesale hemp extract source. I wanted one who tests all their CBD isolate for THC and sells it at a reasonable cost. When I finally accomplished my goal, the idea for modifying my original Arnica Lotion became a reality.

Ultimately, there are many people who find hemp extract is helpful, while others don’t experience any benefits at all. Only trying it for yourself will prove which person you are.
