2 Easy and Cheap Ways to Apply Lotion to Your Back

You don’t need expensive lotion applicators to apply lotion to your back. Here are 2 easy and cheap ways to get the job done when you don’t have anyone to help you.

A Spatula with an Old Sock

This is the cheapest method. All you need is a long-handled spatula ($1.10 at the Dollar Tree near me), an old cotton sock and some string.

Making the Lotion Applicator

My husband’s socks always wear out at the heel, so I cut the sock right through the heel. The ankle portion is thicker and fits around the spatula, so I prefer using it. But you could also use the foot portion.

Or you may have some ankle socks that never stay up. They’ll work great as well. Double them up for a more cushioning.

If you use the ankle portion, you’ll need to turn it inside out and stitch one end closed. Then, turn it right side out and slip over the spatula. Use a string to tie the sock snuggly below the spatula.

How to Use Your Spatula Lotion Applicator

Now, all you have to do is squeeze a dollop of lotion onto the same side of the spatula you’d have facing up if you were going to flip a pancake. Apply the spatula to the center of your back as if you were using a back scratcher to reach your upper back. (Your hand will be over your shoulder.) Slide the spatula up and down and side to side.

To reach the mid-section of your back, place the spatula on your back with your hand at the waist. Slide the spatula up and down and side to side. Covering all the areas you can’t reach with your hands.

Apply more lotion to the sock as necessary.

Storing Your Spatula Lotion Applicator

All lotions contain preservatives, so you can safely store the spatula in a plastic bag until the next time you want to use it. Just twist the bag tightly around the handle of the spatula.

A 4-inch Paint Roller

If you’re flexible, all you’ll need is a 4-inch paint roller with a short nap. Don’t get a foam roller, as the oils in the lotion may break the foam down.

Just squeeze a strip of lotion along the length of the roller, and apply the lotion like you would using the spatula. If the handle isn’t long enough, look for a short, screw-in wood extension.

Advantages of a Paint Roller Lotion Applicator

Here’s why you might enjoy using a paint roller to apply lotion to your back.

  • Get better coverage, once the roller is saturated with lotion.
  • Apply light pressure, so you get a mini-massage at the same time.
  • Pull off the roller part, and store it in a zipper-seal bag. That makes storage more compact.
  • Warm the roller by popping it into a microwave oven for 20 seconds. (Make sure the roller doesn’t have any metal parts.) This can boost the benefits when you’re applying a pain-relief cream.

When to Change Socks or Rollers

You may notice that the lotion changes color. Don’t worry. This is normal. As moisture evaporates, our All for Better Health lotion begins to yellow. This is just the color of the oils emerging.

However, it’s a good idea to wash the sock or roller once it looks greasy. Just toss the sock in with your regular laundry. Or you may handwash socks and rollers in the sink. First, rinse as much of the lotion away as you can. Then rub with soap. Work up a good lather, and then rinse the sock or roller until the water runs clear.

Summary

While a spatula or paint roller may not be as pretty as some of the other lotion applicators out there, you’ll save money. I’ve purchased so many lotion applicators that break within a few months.

I’ve found the paint roller is a great option in our household for another reason. My husband hates the feel of lotion. The paint roller means he doesn’t have to touch the lotion when I ask him for help.

You might find a paint roller is a great way to involve your children in giving back rubs. They can “paint” you as they apply lotion to your back. Yes, it might use more lotion, yet isn’t it worth it when you create fun bonding times?
