The solid hair soap movement is on the rise. However, many people have discovered why their grandmothers were so happy when detergent-based shampoos were invented. Their hair feels like straw and the usual recommendation is to rinse with cider vinegar.

My Story – Why I Make Solid Hair Soap (a.k.a. Shampoo Bars)

My first foray into using “natural” shampoo was a bottle of African Black Soap Shampoo. My hair felt like I’d applied glue to it. A search on the internet quickly told me why. The soap reacted with my hard water and formed scum. I wondered if there was a way to overcome this problem.

Yes, there was. However, my journey led me to a realization. Supply chain issues mean getting bottles could be a problem. Plus, I want to eliminate the plastic waste from liquid soaps and shampoos. So I didn’t explore making soap-based liquid shampoo. Instead, I would develop a solid hair soap.

I set out with these goals.

• The bar needs to lather nicely.
• The suds must rinse clean in hard water, no residue.
• The shampoo bar must not strip my hair.
• The results must leave my hair conditioned and touchable.
• The smell cannot be vinegary!

I found a recipe on the internet that looked interesting and followed it as written. The results gave me hope that with some modification I’d be able to make a superb hair soap that lives up to the expectations modern shampoos have given all of us.

A Truly Superb Shampoo Bar 

Thanks to some good advice from Kevin Dunn of Scientific Soap Making fame, I discovered a simple way to meet all of the goals I had for my solid hair soap bar. And the feedback from so many of the people who have tried my hair cleaning bars has been overwhelmingly positive.

My mom hoards my soaps. She uses my shampoo bars. “My hair has never been so shiny and soft.” (This is from someone who grew up washing her hair with soap made on the farm so she knows what soap makes hair feel like.)

Of course, I only gave her some of my hair soap bars after they worked for me. The very first “experimental” bars I made gave me shiny hair for the first time in my life. (I have very fine hair, so all the products I tried for shine just made it look limp and dirty.)

Each bar of hair soap is gentle enough for daily use. I’m in my 60s and use it daily in the summer and every other day in the winter. I’ve never liked my hair as much as I do now.
